What Is Autogas?

Autogas is the name applied to Liquid Petroleum Gas when used as a vehicle fuel. It is the same gas that is often used for cooking and central heating. There is nothing new about vehicles powered by gas, some of the earliest stationery internal combustion engines were fuelled by gas. During the Second World War, vehicles could be seen with a large box shaped balloon on the roof containing coal gas, or town gas as it was often called, but it is true to say that, during the post war years, the ready availability of petrol reduced the need for gas fuelling. Happily, nowadays the gas technology does not rely on a giant balloon on the roof! The gas is now stored under pressure in liquid form in purpose made tanks. At room temperature and atmospheric pressure Autogas is in a gaseous state, changing to liquid when subjected to pressure.

Worldwide Autogas Activity

Globally, autogas is the fastest growing alternative fuel for transport. More than 5.5 million vehicles are running on autogas in more than 40 countries. In Italy, there are over 1 million cars using autogas.

Almost all taxis in Japan and Australia run on Autogas.

In Holland, for over 40 years the government has accepted Autogas as a clean motor fuel. Consequently the most mature Autogas market in the world has developed there

Recent commitments to Kyoto Protocols to reduce greenhouse gases and general pollution problems in cities (e.g. Hong Kong), have resulted in significant government support worldwide for autogas as a viable, greenhouse friendly, alternative fuel.
